Quick Tips that Can Help You Further Care for Your Smile

Posted .

Brushing, flossing, rinsing, and visiting your dentist, Dr. J. Scott Thompson, DMD, are all great and wonderful things for your smile. In fact, they are vital. Little did you know, there are also smaller things you can do to help boost your oral hygiene as well as your oral health, and our dental team is happy to tell you about them!

First, keep a travel-sized toothbrush and toothpaste with you. Make sure to put a cover over the toothbrush to keep the bristles clean and put your toothbrush and toothpaste in your purse, locker, backpack, or desk drawer. You can even keep it in a compartment in your car! If you have your toothbrush and toothpaste with you, you can clean your teeth once or twice throughout your day. This can help you boost your oral health and even help you avoid having a food-filled smile and odorous breath moments.

Second, chew sugar-free gum. This can help you because chewing gum makes you salivate (produce saliva). When you salivate, the bacteria in your mouth are washed away. So, if you chew sugar-free gum after each meal and snack, the food particles and harmful substances can be rinsed from your mouth, which can help you avoid dental issues.

Third, drink water frequently. Drinking water can also wash your mouth and help you avoid tooth decay and other dental issues. So, make sure you keep a full water bottle with you and sip it throughout the day, or you could simply take frequent trips to the drinking fountain.
